Kids can learn to cross country ski almost as soon as they can walk. With the right equipment and a little patience, your whole family can enjoy a day in the tracks together. Choose a trail that is relatively flat, and then throw in a few short hills once they get the hang of it.

The Town Trailhead parking area loop, Lunachik in Mazama, and Big Valley Trail are all relatively flat, free, and your dog can even join you! Chickadee Loop up at Sun Mountain is another great kid ski with a warming hut at the end for snacks. Or ski to the Suspension Bridge in Mazama and enjoy lunch at the trailside shelter.

Good equipment is essential. Kids ski best on the same equipment that adults use. Light wax-less skis are best for learning, and they should be about the same height as your child. If you have a really little one, try a pulk! Child ski carriages come in lots of different shapes and sizes these days, and they make it easy and comfortable for moms and dads to get out on the trail while the little one takes an afternoon snooze. Pulks can be rented through the Methow Valley Ski School (above).

When the kids are ready for a change of pace, and you still feel like treating yourself to more skiing, offer them some winter fun up at Sun Mountain Lodge. On weekends and holidays throughout the winter, the afternoon ski school staff offers an afternoon program with kid-oriented ski lessons, sleigh rides, snowshoeing and ice skating, with all equipment included.
