About
the Artist
In May of 2009, Sean McCabe was diagnosed with Undifferentiated Anaplastic Carcinoma. This is a very aggressive type of thyroid cancer that affects less than 2% of the population. Sean died at home with his family on November 7, 2009, leaving behind the legacy of his stunning art. The McCabe family is doing its very best to get Sean's newest work on their web site. Please take the time to check it out and to tell others about it.
At 46 artist Sean McCabe had been majoring in art all his life, and climbing / skiing for over half of it. Sean completed his BFA at the University of Utah. After finishing his undergraduate degree he enrolled into the education program and received his teaching certificate. For the last Twenty years Sean taught art at the high school and jr. high school level. During the winter of 2007-8 Sean took some time away from his teaching duties to earn his self directed masters degree in visual art / education. As for his outdoor ventures, Sean actively pursued climbing and skiing, in one form or another, for over half his life. He climbed all over North America and in parts of Asia. His favorite areas of concentration were Utah, North cascades and B.C. Canada.
As a young teacher, teaching in the Granite School District of Utah, Mr. McCabe received the Teacher Of The Year award in his fifth year in the classroom. After moving to Mazama WA. Sean was recognized by his peers at Liberty Bell High School and awarded Teacher Of The Year after only his second year with the district. In the year 2000 McCabe was again honored by his Utah peers, The Olympus High School Alumni Teacher Recognition Committee, and was chosen to receive the prestigious Catalyst Award. This monetary award is given to teachers who had great impact on post graduates lives. The biggest surprise of all came in 2002 when Sean was nationally recognized and awarded The Milkin Family Foundation Award. "I try to motivate students by living what I teach", said Sean.
Sean was a working artist and tried to balance his teaching duties with doing graphic design work for outdoor companies and journals. Over the years Sean established himself in the climbing world as a graphic designer/illustrator. Sean’s graphic designs can be seen on many of The North Face, Patagonia, and Black Diamond clothing labels. As for his illustrations they can be found in American Alpine Journal, and most recently in Climbing Magazine and the Alpinist. "My works focus is based on personnel experiences. I climb and ski partially so I can do my art, and I do art as a way of sharing my experiences with others, they are directly connected".
Sean’s true love was his fine art. His work is both playful and colorful. "My work is expressionistic in that I take liberties with the human form and with color. My figures are almost character like, perhaps similar in style to Thomas Hart Benton’s depiction of the American worker in many of his painting”, said Sean. When asked who else influenced his style he points to Van Gogh. “Without question I am most envious, and impressed by Van Goghs' work. I also find great inspiration and direction from others of that same time period, specifically Bonnard and Degas. I want to do to the climber/ skier what Degas did with dancers, and I strive to create space through color with the same understanding that Bonnard was able too".
Sean’s work is unique in that it reflects who he was. "I do work because I need too, and because I enjoy it. My paintings are a part of me, and for my enjoyment, I do hope however other can relate and find pleasure in them".
Sean described his work as landscapes and shadows from a skiers perspective. Most of his work deals with the relationship between human form and the mountains. His ski subject paintings are definitely influenced by his years training and racing. " My skiers represent me, my friends or experiences, always out their getting after it", said Sean. He insisted his work was also deeply spiritual. "We are but small players in God's magnificent creation. I am always blown away by what God has created for our pleasure, and can think of no better way to glorify him then to paint what he has laid out before us. I can not improve on what God has already done, I just try to show his glory from a little different perspective".
Sean lived in Mazama, WA with 7 year old daughter Novie, 3 year old daughter Dashe and his best friend and wife of over 20 years Laura McCabe. Laura does a bit of skiing and climbing too, she is a two time U.S. Cross Country Olympic ski team member, professional skier for Fischer and coaches for the Methow Valley Nordic Ski Team.
